Words and Proper Names Explained 

ber: primitive Elvish root word meaning "valiant"

Edain: Elf-friends, the three mortal Houses who joined the Elves in the battle against Morgoth

Esgalduin: the river that flows through Doriath

fëa: spirit, soul, considered separately from the whole person as a natural unity of mind and body.

the Fen: the Fen of Serech, where the plains of Ard-galen meet the river valley of Sirion, a throughway and chronic battlefield like Flanders.

Firstborn, Eldar: Elven words for themselves

green::bright: in Elven linguistics, the word-root for "brightness", gal/cal, is derived from the idea of "green" (as leaves shining in sunlight) whereas for example in Russian (among other languages) it is derived from "red," as blood, fire -- but both roots having the connotations of life-force, joy, Springtime, by implication. (In other Mannish tongues words for "brightness" share kinship with "silver" or "white" or "day/divinity" and I am sure many more concepts.)

hröa: the body, considered apart from the whole person, composed of the elements of the earth.

the Ice,  the Helcaraxë: the frozen straights crossed by the Noldor host to reach Middle-earth after their abandonment by Fëanor in the stolen Ships.

kelvar: Elven word for animals

Kementári: "Queen of the Earth", a title of the Vala Yavanna

the Kindler: a title of the Vala Varda, known as Elbereth, who made the Stars

Laurelin: the Golden Tree of Aman, sung into existence by Yavanna, destroyed by Morgoth and the spider-demon Ungoliant

Lord of Fetters: title of the Fallen Vala Morgoth ("Bauglir")

Master of Spirits: title of Namo (Mandos) and his brother Irmo (Lorien), Valar of Death and Sleep respectively (also Justice and Visions)

Master of Wolves, the Necromancer: titles of the Fallen Maia Sauron, Morgoth's chief commander, who both employed werewolves and could transform into one at will.

Minas Tirith: "Tower of Guard," another name for Tol Sirion, the river-fort built by Finrod Felagund that guarded the access through the mountains between the plains of Ard-galen and Southern Beleriand; renamed Tol-in-Gaurhoth, Isle of Werewolves, after its capture by Sauron.

Nargothrond: hidden cave-city-fortress, capital of the largest Elven kingdom in Beleriand, founded by Finrod.

Noldor: the second host of the Eldar to travel to Aman, masters of scientific and artistic knowledge, and the first to become warriors.

olvar: Elven word for plants

Secondborn, Atani, the Sickly Ones: Elven words for mortal Men

Sindarin: of the Grey Elven people, who never completed the journey to Aman.

Tavros: another name for the Vala Oromë, Lord of the Hunt

Telperion: the Silver Tree of Aman, destroyed by Morgoth and the spider-demon Ungoliant
